When 5-inch may be enough
A straightforward roof with shorter runs and ordinary water concentration may perform well with a correctly pitched 5-inch system and properly placed downspouts.
When 6-inch deserves a look
Large roof sections, steep pitches, long runs and valleys that concentrate water can call for more capacity. A 6-inch system can also pair with larger downspouts, but sizing should be based on the whole drainage path.
Downspouts are part of the decision
A larger trough cannot help much if outlets or downspouts restrict the flow. Count, size, placement and discharge routing should be considered with the gutter size.
Get the roofline checked
A local professional can identify concentrated flow areas, measure the runs and look for access or fascia issues. That on-site review is the right place to make the final size decision.
